The Irondale Alabama Historical Society is selling a calendar to help offset operational expenses.

“The Early Years of Irondale, Alabama” calendar features photographs of landmarks that helped shape the city, including the old Irondale Depot. The information in the 15-month calendar was gathered from sources including the city, the Birmingham Public Library, the Birmingham Post-Herald and from people’s private collections. It includes this month through December, 2010.

The society, which has about 20 members, formed in July 2008.
Denise Wright, the society’s president, said the group has been selling the calendars since August. So far, the calendar has been a tool for attracting members as far away as Ohio, she said.

“It gets people’s interest and they see what we’re doing,” said Wright.

Jim Tackett, a society member, said the calendar also has spawned people’s interest in working together to highlight the city’s history. The society has begun to get more participation from groups, including garden and book clubs, he said.

Wright said she hopes the calendars will prompt more people to contribute information and pictures in the future.

“There’s a lot of rich history in Irondale, but it’s all in everybody’s heads and houses,” Wright said.

Calendars can be purchased for $10 from an Irondale Alabama Historical Society member or at the Irondale Public Library, 105 20th St. South. Calendars also may be purchased online for $15 at www.irondalehistory.org
