The Greater Irondale Chamber of Commerce is organizing An Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade and Christmas at the Caboose, said Joyce Franklin, executive director of the chamber. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at the Irondale Community School on 16th Street.
Patrick Cooper and William Bell are headed for a Jan. 19 runoff to take the Birmingham mayor’s seat.
With 159 of 160 precincts tallied, Cooper had 40.1 percent to Bell’s 25.1 percent. Smitherman ranked third with 18.8 percent.
On a recent Sunday morning, a Norfolk Southern railroad worker spotted a man with a red backpack on a freight train as it lumbered out of a Birmingham-area rail yard, and he wasn’t an employee.
When authorities stopped the train in Avondale, the man jumped off and ran away.
Three days later railroad police pulled a person they believed was the same man off another freight train in Irondale.
Jim Dolan wasn’t a bit surprised to be asked about his recipe for the scalloped oysters he serves at Irondale Cafe.
“I have one customer who routinely calls to ask when I’m going to have them on the menu,” he said, referring to a dish that his mother often served at Thanksgiving.

The Mounties Wrestling team will host its first tournament at Shades Valley in several years. Over the Mountain Duals is tonight at 5pm in the Shades Valley Gymnasium with eight teams participating.
