Train-hopping raises concern

On a recent Sunday morn­ing, a Norfolk Southern rail­road worker spotted a man with a red backpack on a freight train as it lumbered out of a Birmingham-area rail yard, and he wasn’t an employee.

When authorities stopped the train in Avondale, the man jumped off and ran away.

Three days later railroad police pulled a person they believed was the same man off another freight train in Irondale.
